Demonstration of AIS with a SafePassageAIS
Receiver
To see how AIS worked during a day trip on a
sailboat equipped with SafePassageAIS you can use either Coastal Explorer (see www.rosepointnav.com)
or Maptech Chart Navigator Pro (see www.maptech.com).
Take the following steps:
- Download the "Log" file from http://seacas.com/anacortes043006.log
and save it to your hard disk.
- Start Coastal Explorer or Chart Navigator Pro
- When it is running, hold down the left
"Shift" key and click the right mouse button.
- The following menu will show on screen:

- Click on "Run NMEA Log File"
- Browse to the anacortes043006.log file on your
hard disk and click on its name
Notes:
- The AIS and GPS data were
generated by a production version of SafePassageAIS 300 on April 30th
2006 on a day trip from Anacortes, Washington, USA
- The sail boat was a C&C 35
and SafePassage was installed on a rail mount ab-aft (i.e. not on any mast).
- We had a near-miss with
SEASPAN PACER at 20:40 UTC (01:40 PM PDT) and had to start the engine to
avoid a collision
- Please note that many times
during the trip SafePassage "saw" targets that were more than 30
NM away. At one point in time we even "saw" a ship that was 56 NM
away. (Select "Tools", "Navigational Objects", "AIS
Ships" for a list of targets then sort them by range by clicking on the
"Range" column heading)
- Please also note that we
"saw" the ferry in Friday Harbor, even though it was shielded from
us by several islands.
